Be You. Get More. Without Apology.

The Small Steps to Big Success: Your Future Self Is Waiting

Oct 15, 2023

Have you ever stopped to reflect on how far you've come? It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, constantly striving for that next promotion, big client or earning goal.

Goals are important - we talk about it all the time, but more important than achieving the goal is having fun with the journey. The goal is your direction, the journey is your life.

When we think about personal and professional growth, it's often tempting to focus solely on those big leaps forward—the promotions, the pay raises, or the milestones that seem insurmountable when we first set out on our journey.

But what if I told you that constant little steps toward your goal can cover as much ground as those big leaps? That by feeling and behaving like the person who has already achieved your goals, your future self, you don't have to wait to experience the benefit and results she already has.

Mind blowing right! I challenge you to give it a try. Read on...

If your future self, the person who has achieved your goal of getting a promotion, she asks for what she wants and feels confident in negotiating, imagine your self as her right now. Feel how she feels and then do one small thing she would do. Seriously - try it, close your eyes and be her. How do you feel?

Now take one small action that she would do. Is it get up early to pursue learning opportunities? Would she find a mentor? Would she set up a professional development plan with her manager? Be her now. Do as she would do.

If you're a job seeker and your future self works for a value aligned company, what kind of jobs does she apply for? How does she qualify which organizations have a work culture she wants to belong to? What questions does she ask in the interview? Close your eyes, imagine you are her. How do you feel?

What is one small step she would do today to get her closer to that goal? Do it. Be her now. You don't have to wait until you have the job to feel as she feels.

If you're future self wants to be an entrepreneur but you just can't find time amidst the busy schedule of parenting and a 9-to-5 job, take a minute now to visualize her —the woman who knows her purpose and desires to pursue entrepreneurship. How does she find ways to make time for small actions? Maybe it's getting a babysitter for an afternoon, turning down an event you're not enthusiastic about, or hiring a coach. Do as she does, now. Not the big leap, the one small step.

Be her now. You do not need to wait for the result, your goal, to feel good. You can be her now, your goal is your navigation beacon, not the thing you need, or are waiting for, to make you happy.
