How to Start a Business

Have you ever dreamed of creating your own business but don’t know where to start? The answer is simpler than you think.

Just do it! Staring is just that… taking your first step. It feels hella scary but that first step usually starts in your head!

Starting my business was THE. SCARIEST. THING. EVER. Seriously. I was changing careers (I’d never been an entrepreneur), changing industries (lovely to meet you Human Resources) and I’d just moved countries and had my second baby.

I kept banging on about this problem I saw and how “if only there was a solution…” It was actually my bestie who said “why don’t you stop complaining and do something about it”.

Well, the limiting beliefs came flooding in hard and fast.

I’m too old to change careers.
No one will pay me.
I don’t know what I’m doing.
I’m going to fail.
What will my friends and peers think about me when I fail?
I can’t afford to launch a business.

Yes, my brain was screaming at me DON’T DO IT! But my heart was also screaming.

My heart was screaming…
But I could help so many people.
This is a good idea.
What if it all worked out?

And so I started…

The first step to starting your business is exploration. Giving yourself permission to dream.

If anything is possible, what do you want to create? Who do you want to help? What activities would you want to do on a daily basis? Who do you want to surround myself with - customers and colleagues? How much money do you want to make?

Write it all down. Giving yourself permission to explore and dream without judgment will feel hard but it is a critical step in developing your aiming point or direction. What do you want?

Step two - talk about it!

Put your idea out in the world. You don’t have to build anything yet, in fact, I would suggest building nothing at all.  Connect with potential customers, talk to other entrepreneurs about their journey and share yours. It can feel scary and you may feel vulnerable putting yourself out there but just remind your brain that you are not committing, just exploring, refining and learning. Chances are, those first connections will end up becoming your community, your biggest cheerleaders and possibly your customers along the way.

Finally, do it.

When I say “do it” I mean test it, prototype. Get one person to purchase your product or services. It can be a friend or family member, it can be someone you spoke to during your research calls. Test the offer before you invest in building out your final message, your website, your full product. Your customer will help you develop all of those.

It all starts with one small step my friends.

Like sowing seeds in your garden. That very first step happens where no one can see - below the surface, in the planting and tending.

Are you ready to take the first step? My experience taught me that before I could launch or grow my business I had to examine my limiting beliefs, especially around money.
